Automatic tester for seed drills

This trolley can automatically check the efficiency and reliability of seed drills

Profile

What was required:
plain bearings for use in a carriage to test the efficiency and reliability of seed drills

Requirements:
lightweight, low-friction, durable as well as corrosion-free and maintenance-free components

Industry:
agricultural technology

Success for the customer:
with the help of the igubal bearings as well as drylin linear guides, all requirements could be met and the required maximum weight of the carriage could even be reduced by 2kg.

Problem:

In the development of this test trolley for the work of seed drills, a weight of 22kg could not be exceeded. In addition, the developers were looking for components that could be used without any problems in the presence of dirt and moisture.

Solution:

By using igubal spherical bearings and drylin linear guides, the weight of the carriage could be reduced and maintenance and lubrication of the bearing points became unnecessary.

Automatic instead of manual

Kuhn specialises in the development, manufacture and marketing of agricultural equipment. In order to optimise the return on investment for its customers, Kuhn must ensure the efficiency and reliability of its automatic seed drills. Until recently, this could only be checked manually.

Two students decided to develop a trolley as part of their final thesis, with which verification can be carried out automatically. With the help of a sensor and a camera, the system is able to measure the distance between the plants and locate missing plants or defects.

Challenge mastered

The test trolley is designed for use on canola, corn, soybean, sunflower and beet fields. The first challenge was to ensure that the trolley and the components used in it could withstand shocks and vibrations caused by uneven ground.

As igus offers each product series in different sizes, the two designers were able to easily select the right components for their application from the igus range. The igus components are robust and insensitive, which is why the use in shock and vibration is not a problem.

The second challenge was to ensure easy transportation and assembly of the cart in an agricultural environment. Here, the igus components again played into the hands of the two developers.

The igus bearings and linear guides used, enable ideal sliding with low friction. In addition, the entire unit can be mounted without tools thanks to igus components. The total weight of the trolley must not exceed 22kg. The igus components play into the designers' cards once again, as they are very light. The weight of the car could therefore even be reduced to 20kg.

As the car is exposed not only to vibrations and shocks but also to mud and rain, the components must withstand these environmental conditions. After extensive testing under these conditions, the two designers found that the igus components could withstand mud and rain without any problems.

Conventional bearings were not even considered because they could not meet the requirements for low weight and installation space. These bearings would have also required regular maintenance and greasing.

Therefore igubal EFOM spherical bearings as well as igubal KSTM pillow block bearings are used. The trolley also contains three drawers, which are equipped with drylin W linear guides with a WHKAQ manual clamping. All igus components used meet the requirements for the test trolley. They are lightweight, low friction, durable, and are free of corrosion and maintenance.
